Why did Merlot get a bad rap? Some movie actor utters nonsense about an entire category of red wine, and the entire market goes down? I just don't get it, and am really happy to see Merlot make a well-deserved come back.
The good folks at Sebastiani are working hard to restore Merlot's former good name, and my recent wine club shipment and it's yummy contents are proof. The 2008 Sonoma County Merlot is a delightfully fruity, structured, and well-balanced release from this time-honored vintner.
This wine was both rich yet mellow, and provided a wonderful taste sensation on the fore, mid, and back palates. I tasted bright berried fruit, English Breakfast tea, red cherries, and rich but soft oak flavors in this wonderful Merlot.
Hubby and I shared a wonderful glass of this last night before bed in a handcrafted earthernware chalice I bought many years ago in Sonoma Valley; it ushered us off to inspired Halloween night dreams and the first good night's sleep I have had in a long time.
Team Sebastiani - keep it up and let's work together to restore the reputation of a wine that deserves to win back its place in the hearts of wine drinkers everywhere.
Food Pairings: The tasting notes from Sebastiani mention pairing this Merlot with Salami - which I just happened to have in the frig. I can truly attest to how great this pairing was from personal experience! I also think this would be a wonderful wine for a Pasta y Fageoli, or an Eggplant Parmesan. It has very soft tannins and is very lush.
Other Pairings: What a great nightcap wine! This is also a lovely choice for a dinner party, movie night, or potluck with friends and neighbors.
Music Pairings: Edvard Grieg compositions, Rat Pack jazz, and harpsichord music all blend harmoniously with this awesome Merlot!
