A great inexpensive wine buy for those special, but still every-night dinners is Menage A Trois by Folie a Deux. At about $8-9/bottle, it won't break the bank and is ideal for celebrating Bastille Day (unless, of course, you happen to have a bottle of Chateau Margaux just hanging around, just sayin'). I first had this wine on my birthday in 2010 at the Elephant Bar in Cupertino, it went perfectly with the grilled platter (steak, shrimp, and chicken) that my husband and I ordered. It was February, but nice enough to sit outside with a little heater. Hubbie loved this wine so much that it is now his "go-to" wine when he needs to give a gift to someone, like the kind person who just vacuum sealed all the nice Salmon he caught yesterday.
A blend of Zin, Merlot, and Cab - it is fruity and flavorful, with a nice color and nose. I would rate it at an 88, would be more, but it lacks complexity. It has nice strawberry jam flavors, with a hint of black cherry and just a touch of spice.
Food Pairings: Serve with grilled foods such as pork tenderloin, BBQ chicken on the grill, anything Chinese in a plum sauce, summer salads with candied pecans, chicken strips and blue cheese, and sliced Fontina with whole grain crackers.
Other Pairings: This is a great "watching the Giants play" wine! It also goes with finishing up expense reports (mindless, but necessary so a little wine buzz won't hurt), playing board games, and watching reruns of McCloud on Netflix. Oh yeah, also goes with very cool combo Fedora/Bowler hats.
